Summary

spillage kits; identification of storm water drains
The Project
CHH developed the following programme to instigate their Cleaner
Production programme:
- An environmental policy
- A Health & Safety team which
doubles as the Cleaner Production team
- A routine environmental monitoring programme
- The setting of Cleaner Production project objectives
- The collection of detailed information
- Option generation

The following Environmental Policy was developed to declare

As employees of Carter Holt Harvey, we are committed to care
for the environment in which we live and work, and to maintain
its quality for the benefit of future generations
This will be achieved through adoption of the following principles:

Risk Management Principle
the activities over which each of us has control will be carried out in ways
which minimise the risk of harm to the environment
Resource Efficiency Principle
operations will be conducted in ways which result in the more efficient use
of natural resources
Waste Minimisation Principle
waste will be minimised and, where possible, eliminated
Good Housekeeping Principle
workplaces will be kept in a clean and tidy state
Staff involvement
Carter Holt Harvey recognise the value in keeping staff informed. Weekly meetings
are held to discuss routine activities. Monthly meetings are held which include
the entire Tissue Group. Issues discussed at these meetings are broader than
the weekly meetings. A monthly newsletter is produced and then circulated
as far as Australia.
Solvent recovery
In an effort to reduce solvent discharge and improve health and safety for
staff, Carter Holt Harvey Tissue have invested in a new solvent recovery
system. This new system includes a Renzmann Washing process and solvent distillation
unit for their printing press. The system involves mechanical washing of
printing parts and recycling of solvent wastes.
Economics
The pay back period has been estimated at a minimum of 4 years.
Benefits
- minimum annual savings of $34,000
- prevents the need for caustic wash-up ( a savings
of $300 /year )
- eliminates staff handling of hazardous substances
- eliminates storage of spent solvent
- reuses solvent
- reduces the purchase of solvent
- reduces potential for spills into local environment
- reduces trade waste discharges
- improves efficiency as printing parts are cleaner
Recycling in-house
Waste kraft and tissue are separated at source and recycled at Carter Holt
Harvey Penrose mill. Here waste paper is reprocessed into new paper products.
Waste polyethylene is also recycled on-site - requiring minimal transport
and reprocessing.
Recycling externally
Un-bleached kraft is bailed and sent to Paper Reclaim for recycling. This reduces
the cost Carter Holt Harvey Tissue's expenditure on waste disposal.
Water recycling
Carter Holt Harvey operate water recycling systems on their printing machines
and film extruders. Previously, water had been sent to trade waste - now
with the recycling system, water consumption has reduced by more than a half.
Benefits
- Reduction of water input by 15,000 Lts/ week
- Reduction of stormwater discharge
Stormwater identification
All stormwater drains have been identified and marked using a stencilled 'fish'.
This system is an excellent way of reducing the potential for pollutants
entering local streams.
Spillage kits
Spillage kits contain an assortment of cleaning aids including: shovels, gloves,
aprons and granules for mopping up oil. The kits eliminate the threat of
contamination into other systems.
