G512 - Plimmerton Quality Meats - Butcher - Wellington
Region
Summary
This business minimises the amount of packaging used.
Business Profile
Suburban butcher with two staff, located in Plimmerton Village centre.
Type of Project
Reduction in packaging waste, resource conservation
Reasons for Project
To reduce resource use and produce less waste
The Project
Packaging
This shop uses very little shrink wrapping and no vacuum packing. Products
are displayed in metal (stainless steel) and plastic trays. Customers receive
their purchases in plastic bags or brown wrapping paper. Cartons are reused
for orders, such as a side of beef.
Costs are reduced on buying packaging and disposing of it. Only
one 240 l bin is collected every week, and that is mainly newspaper
used on the floor and floor sweepings. Rubbish collection costs
$14 per month
Equipment
Blades in the saw machine last about one week. They are sharpened once, then
have to be discarded. The blades cost $12 new and $5 to sharpen, leading
to a monthly cost of $34. Hand saws cost $3 to sharpen and cost $22 new.
They probably last about six months.
