H5710 - Southern Cross Motor Inn - Waikato Region
Summary
The Southern Cross Motor Inn has examined energy efficiency and begun a bulb
replacement programme in the restaurant using energy efficient light bulbs.
The company has employed a slow cooking process for meats which allowed the
appliances to operate on the night electricity tariff.
Business Profile
Business Profile The Southern Cross Motor Inn has 38 units, a 150 seat restaurant
and a 100 seat conference facility.
Type of Project
Energy efficiency.
Reasons for Project
Reason for project Energy costs represent a significant proportion of the company's
operating costs and any reductions will boost competitive advantage.
The Project
Electricity use
| Details |
Energy efficient
bulbs have been installed in the restaurant/bar area. Electric
cookers (for meats) operate on the night tariff. |
| Economics |
Savings have not
been calculated, but are expected to include electricity,
labour and bulb costs. |
| Benefits |
Slow cooking of
meats provides a better quality product and reduced electricity
consumption is a bonus. |
Heating
| Details |
The restaurant and
kitchen areas have been designed to enable the transfer of
heat from the kitchen to the restaurant area. |
| Benefits |
During winter months
no additional heating is generally required. |
| Problems |
During summer months
the elevated temperature in the restaurant required the installation
of ceiling fans. |
Further projects
Details:
An energy services consultant undertook a preliminary investigation and identified
a number of areas where savings could be realised. These include:
- Reviewing efficiency of gas fired water heating.
- Examine kitchen extract ventilation system.
- Review conference room air conditioning and
heating.
- Examine laundry dryer exhaust.
- Review controls for space heating for
individual units.
Problems:
The complex occupies two sites and is served by both as and electrical hot
water systems. The rationalisation of energy services and the installation
of individual unit controls is unlikely to occur until a major refurbishment
is undertaken.
Applicability to other businesses
The projects being undertaken by the Southern Cross Motor Inn could be implemented
by any other business providing food or accommodation services.
